That DJ MIKA is a true Soca music lover is proven in a lot of performances on music trucks from London to Port of Spain, the heart of Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. The “Showtime” mixtape was a custom-made selection for the SHOWTIME CARNIVAL Mas Band, which amazes each year with beautiful costumes for the road. The DJ lady was more than excited to be a part of the DJ team not knowing, that they will refuse her to perform and not keeping their promises of having the female DJ performing in one of their costumes.

EUROPEAN-BASED SOCA MIXTAPE – BLAZE A TRAIL ACROSS COUNTRIES
How does Soca sound, that was produced in Europe, but still inspired by the Caribbean? What is the story behind the development of Soca music in Europe? DJ MIKA was having these questions for months, and after long research, she was able to locate Soca releases in 11 different countries, performed in different languages, like French, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, Switzer-German, and German. Being able to speak different languages, the trailblazer was able to get in touch and interview these artists. The result was an article she wrote about THE EUROPEAN SOCA MOVEMENT, which was released in the now no longer existing Carnevale Network, based in London, United Kingdom. “Blaze a Trail” is not just a regular two hours selection. All 60 artists are waving the flag for Soca music high and supporting the worldwide spread of music and culture. This mix is breaking time and language borders, showing you also how different the streams of Soca can sound.
This mix has been featured in several radio interviews in Trinidad and Tobago and played on the online radio stations SOCA PASSION LIVE and TEAM SOCA.

The idea of blazing a trail was continued and turned into a school project, which was realized at Woodbrook Secondary School, Port of Spain with official permission from the Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago. The project was a series of workshops, held with local music professionals, a class teacher, and DJ MIKA, introducing audiovisuals to the development of Soca music in Europe. The workshops included classes about music production, music performance (presented through a steel pannist), and costume design, as a part of the carnival culture. The party series “Caribbean Wine” started a few years before this recording, bringing Soca fans from Europe together to celebrate the powerful sounds of the Caribbean. The location was several clubs in Brunswick, Germany, where Soca music was blazing for the very first time. The events were more than memorable, featuring DJ MIKA for a whole night long first and later bringing in other DJs like Threeks Sound or the Soca Twins in a combination. This is the warm-up selection where everybody just arrived and was happy to be welcomed with vibes from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Aruba, St. Vincent, Barbados, Jamaica, USA, and the United Kingdom. We love Soca, nothing more to say.

Just imagine two DJ ladies, meeting short after Notting Hill Carnival in London (United Kingdom). DJ MIKA and SISTA KA (originally from France (Paris) based in the United Kingdom) are long-time friends and just had memorable Carnival experiences. Also, DJ MIKA celebrated one of the best birthdays ever, performing on one of the blasting music trucks. There were still a lot of “vibes” in the air. Can you hear it? The show was live broadcasted on SLR RADIO (97.7 FM – London, UK).
